IIn late 2021, I discovered Wolf-Hollow Ice Cave. The cave had been long forgotten and lost to the lonely hollow from which it was born. Wolf-Hollow Cave had been mentioned in a variety of publications including the American Journal of Science and Arts by Benjamin Silliman (1824), Glacières; or Freezing Caverns by Edwin Swift Balch (1900), and Ice Caves and Frozen Wells as Meteorological Phenomenon (1901). This cave was recognized for a paradoxical phenomenon that takes place within. It is known to develop a significant amount of perennial ice and was reported to contain ice until autumn each year. What makes this cave stand out from the typical ice caves I have visited is that it possesses a variety of natural conditions that allow it to maintain a temperature below 0 °C (32 °F) in one portion for most of, if not all year. I was able to observe conditions conducive to such phenomena and hope to track the environment of the cave and the surrounding forest remotely throughout 2023.
